Orchids: Orchids go Hollywood
By ARTHUR CHADWICK
Published: March 26, 2011 The one word that best describes the world of orchids is glamour. No group of plants has ever captured the imagination like this strange, exotic and beautiful flower.
When they were discovered in the late 1700s and early 1800s, orchids became sought after by European royalty.
Cattleyas were especially revered by collectors and were eventually given the title "Queen of the Orchids."
From the late 1920s through the 1950s, women wore corsages of cattleya flowers whenever they wanted a touch of glamour. President Eisenhower's wife, Mamie, was never seen in public without her corsage of two or three cattleya flowers. In the 1940s, teenage boys gave their junior or senior prom dates cattleya corsages, because the girls expected them.
Hollywood personalities such as Gregory Peck and Raymond Burr grew a treasure trove of cattleyas.
During Peck's television interviews, he often was surrounded by his large cattleya plants.
Burr's orchid collection was legendary and included a sizable commercial interest, Sea God Nurseries, with hundreds of registered cattleya hybrids and an orchid garden on the Indonesian island of Java.
One of our modern-day celebrities, Priscilla Presley, sat down recently to have her picture taken with her namesake orchid, Cattleya Priscilla Presley. It was through mutual friends that we approached her several years ago about having an orchid named in her honor.
She liked the idea and, in the months that followed, she personally selected the hybrid from photographs of seedlings that were in production. As the delicate buds started to appear in the sheaths, we would ship the special plants across the country — in the dead of winter — praying that the plants wouldn't freeze or get damaged.
All the seedlings from this celebrity cross bloom during January and February — exactly when they are desired most by hobbyists. The lavender shaded petals vary ever so slightly from plant to plant, and the darker throats offer a hint of gold veining and an unmistakable fragrance.
Presley, who also has a rose perfume that carries her name, keeps a collection of her namesake orchids in Beverly Hills, Calif., where they bloom for more than a month.
The new hybrid was unveiled for the first time to the public as a large grouping of seedlings at last month's Virginia Orchid Society show in Richmond.

Elvis Presley's 1961 benefit concert remembered
By Jaymes Song
Associated Press / March 24, 2011
HONOLULU--Fifty years ago, Elvis Presley helped raised money and directed much-needed attention to the stalled efforts to build the USS Arizona Memorial. The King is now being remembered for his contributions as the historic sites at Pearl Harbor enters a new era.
Pacific Historic Parks, in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc., will start selling T-shirts on Friday for $24.95 to commemorate the iconic crooner's historic benefit concert at Pearl Harbor's Bloch Arena on March 25, 1961. Proceeds will support the educational programs at the USS Arizona Memorial and the new $56 million Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.
The black T-shirt features an image of the original concert billboard with Presley standing in his gold lame suit and a hangtag replica of the concert ticket. The shirts will be available at the visitor center's bookstore or online at http://www.PacificHistoricParks.org through the end of the year.
"For us, recognizing this benefit concert is a way of making the public aware of the cultural history of the memorial," said Daniel Martinez, Pearl Harbor historian for the National Park Service's World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument.
Congress in the late 1950s authorized the construction of the memorial to honor the crewmembers entombed when the USS Arizona was sunk during an aerial attack by the Japanese that plunged the United States into World War II. The Pacific War Memorial Commission was tasked with raising $500,000 to build the USS Arizona Memorial.
Ralph Edwards, host of the hit TV series, "This is Your Life," kicked off the public fundraising efforts on his Dec. 3, 1958 show when he featured Arizona crewmember and Medal of Honor recipient Samuel Fuqua. More than $95,000 was raised.
But contributions and attention dwindled over the next couple years, with less than half of the $500,000 raised. Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, read about the stalled efforts in the Los Angeles Examiner.
Presley, who was already scheduled to be in the islands to film "Blue Hawaii," agreed to help by performing a benefit concert. It was his last live stage performance for more than eight years.
"Both of these celebrities, one that kicked it off and one that came to its aid two years later, are important," Martinez said. "I think this is the beginning of the influence of celebrities in national campaigns of fundraising in our country. ... It wasn't just a concert. It was an event that had national attention and media coverage."
On March 25, 1961, the 26-year-old Presley took the stage to an arena packed with 4,000 frenzied, screaming fans who paid anywhere from $3 to $100 a ticket.
Presley performed 15 songs that night, including "Heartbreak Hotel," "All Shook Up," "I Got A Woman," "I Need Your Love Tonight," "Don't Be Cruel," "Are You Lonesome Tonight," and "Swing Down Sweet Chariot." He ended the show with a rousing performance of "Hound Dog, which included a slide across the stage on his knees.
The concert raised about $54,000, and public and private donations poured in following the show, which received heavy publicity across the country. Hawaii's then-freshman Sen. Daniel Inouye, who today is the most senior member of the Senate, helped secure the final $150,000 to complete the construction during the fall.
"Mr. Presley's role is significant because it brought renewed interest in finishing the memorial and undoubtedly had an influence on the citizens of the United States and our government," Martinez said.
The USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated the following year on Memorial Day -- May 30, 1962. The gleaming, white, open-air structure straddles the Arizona's sunken hull, where 1,177 lives were lost. In all, some 2,400 sailors, Marines and soldiers were killed in the attack on Dec. 7, 1941.
"This is one of many examples we have of Elvis' desire to use his talent to help and honor others," Jack Soden, president and CEO of Elvis Presley Enterprises said in a statement. "Especially considering his own military service, we're certain this one was especially significant to Elvis."
Today, the USS Arizona Memorial, a top visitor attraction in Hawaii, is managed by the National Park Service and includes the newly rebuilt Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

Priscilla Presley Launches Jewelry Collection
Forget the blue suede shoes: Priscilla Presley is venturing into the world of jewelry. The businesswoman (and Elvis Presley’s former wife) has created a new line of baubles called, appropriately, the Priscilla Presley Jewelry Collection, debuting on QVC Friday. “My hopes were that this line would add a little unconventionality and beauty to every woman’s day-to-day,” Presley tells PEOPLE of the intricate necklaces, earrings and rings, designed to emanate rock-meets-red carpet glamour. “It shouldn’t be difficult to accessorize,” she continues. “I have many friends and family who simply feel a panic when trying to put together an outfit. I want my jewelry to be the go-to jewelry. I want women to be able to throw on a pair of jeans or a little black dress but simply reach into the jewelry box without much thought … and just go! No other thoughts than [to] feel unique, beautiful and like a million dollars when they walk out that door.” Sounds like a plan to us! The collection, priced from $23 to $75, launches Friday at 1 a.m. EST on QVC. Tell us: Will you check out Presley’s new line? –Kim Peiffer

Priscilla Presley Calls Justin Bieber 'Great' Young Talent
ET's Nancy O'Dell sits down with Priscilla Presley -- former wife of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley -- and Priscilla singles out teen sensation Justin Bieber as one of today's young talented musicians.
When asked whether there could ever be another musical giant like Elvis, Priscilla tells ET it's unlikely because the business has changed so much. "You know, today is such a different time. It's just a different time. Justin Bieber is actually doing great at a very young age, that's another phenomena."
Priscilla also says she admires the young talented performers on "Glee" and she'd love to see the show incorporate some Elvis music. "I think it's great. They should be doing Elvis music on there one time... I think it would be great, why not."
Priscilla also introduced ET to her new jewelry line that she's launching on QVC on March 18th. She revealed to ET that she's been designing jewelry for many years and was the one who came up with the idea for Elvis to wear the big belt buckle that became his trademark: "Well I found the prototype to that in Soho and it was all leather and had chains, and I brought it to him and said this might be great for the stage, with the stage wear, and he loved it of course."

Change of Heart For Graceland RevitalizationUpdated: Friday, 11 Mar 2011, 6:25 PM CST
Published : Friday, 11 Mar 2011, 6:25 PM CST
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - For about a year, residents in Whitehaven have been looking forward to some major changes in their neighborhood. Changes they thought would bring in more revenue but this week everything changed.
In Brief:
-Graceland pulls out of makeover for neighborhood surrounding Graceland.
-Whitehaven business owners were counting on revitalization.
- CKX, the owner of Elvis Presley Enterprises says the economy is the reason they had to change it's course.
"I think it's unfortunate that they would come up with some excuses. It seems that every time it comes to our communities there's some excuse, rational reason why things can't get done, be done," Reverend Stanford L. Hunt at Beahler Baptist. The plan would've provided a makeover for the area surrounding Graceland, including a new heartbreak hotel but CKX, the owner of Elvis Presley Enterprises says the economy is the reason they had to change it's course.
"Everybody knows the economy is taking a hit but we still need that money to build up Whitehaven to get things back to rolling," said Whitehaven resident, Colin Rayborn.
Business owners like Hazel Moore, who is known as the mayor of Whitehaven, says she and other business owners were counting on the revitalization to bring more customers to their stores and says the move to cancel plans hurts more than Whitehaven.
"It's gonna be a difference in the money the city will receive for not bringing it," said Moore.
Others say CKX should think of the tourists who bring dollars into the community and walk away with a view of a run down Memphis.
"It ought to be done because all of the tourist that come in here we don't want them to see raggedy buildings, torn streets or empty buildings," said Rev. Hunt.
Memphians say there's no place like the Bluff City when it comes to building successful communities.
"I really think they would really get their money back in terms of the investment they would make and Memphis is always a good place to make a good investment," said Rev. Hunt.
With everything on hold, Moore only has one question.
"What is gonna happen for the future? That's the next answer I want to hear- what the future gonna be, not just where it stopped," said Moore.

Priscilla Presley launches Rock-Glam Jewelry for QVC
Written by Sarah Sudar
Over the years, Priscilla Presley has worn many hats. She is well-known for her role as wife to rock and roll icon, Elvis Presley, mother to daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, and as an actress in three Naked Gun movies and on the television show, Dallas. But now, Ms. Presley is ready to put on a new hat: jewelry designer.
On Friday, March 18, Ms. Presley will launch the Priscilla Presley Jewelry Collection on QVC. Aimed at providing rock star glam at affordable prices, the jewelry line is uniquely inspired by pieces from Ms. Presley's personal jewelry collection. This collection will offer women affordable jewelry that looks expensive and is versatile enough to be worn to the office or to an upscale event.
Creating jewelry at an affordable price point was one of the challenges Ms. Presley faced when creating the line. At first, she thought about creating fine jewelry, but the sign of the current time is affordable fashion. She says that creating jewelry with the right weight and beauty that fit into the prices that consumers of QVC were use to was difficult. Despite the challenge, Ms. Presley succeeded.
Pieces in the collection include necklaces, earrings and rings priced at under $100. Signature pieces include a pair of earring with diamond teardrops hanging from diamond-encrusted Gothic crosses that resemble a pair of earrings she wore to a Graceland fundraiser, and a Byzantine-inspired cross pendant that reflects one of the many cross pendants that Elvis gave her as gifts over their years together.
When wearing jewelry, Ms. Presley says that she believes less is more. She says that there is an old rule that she follows that says you should wear no more than three pieces of jewelry at one time. For Ms. Presley, a couple statement pieces like a set of gorgeous earrings and a chunky ring on a finger is an appropriate way to accessorize.
Ms. Presley will launch her jewelry collection on QVC Friday, March 18, from 1-2 am. Pieces from the collection are currently available online for purchase at http://www.qvc.com.
Have a great weekend and be sure to check back on Monday for another Clutch post!

Presley's new love is jewelry line
By CLOE CABRER | The Tampa Tribune
Published: March 5, 2011
For much of her life, people knew her best as "Elvis' ex."
But Priscilla Presley, now 65, eventually made a name for herself as an actress and entrepreneur. She starred in the "Naked Gun" movies with Leslie Nielsen and as Jenna Wade in TV's "Dallas." And she founded Elvis Presley Enterprises, helping turn "Graceland," the home they once shared, into a tourist attraction.
Now, Presley has launched a jewelry line that bears her name.
It was a chance, she says, to combine her business expertise with her love of jewelry. "I've always been interested in fashion and made my own clothes when I was a child," says Presley, speaking from her home in Los Angeles. "I guess there's always been a frustrated designer in me. I always like to buy a piece of jewelry and tweak it and make it my own. I've always wanted to do this."
Presley will show her collection March 18 on QVC, and you can check out some pieces on qvc.com.
Although some of the inspiration for the jewelry line comes from her life with Elvis Presley, the collection isn't a tribute to him, she says.
"He really introduced me to wonderful jewelry and gave me lots of beautiful pieces," says Presley, who was married to the "king of rock 'n' roll" for six years.
"He had a great eye for beauty. But I've developed my own taste and aesthetic. (My collection) has its own glamour and uniqueness."
Presley says Elvis loved to give her crosses, and the line has more modern interpretations, including a pair of gothic cross earrings from which teardrop-shaped simulated diamonds dangle.
"I wore it to a high school reunion at Graceland, and I got so many compliments on it," she says. "It's something you can wear on the red carpet or for a casual day affair."
The collection also includes a remake of a platinum ring her daughter, Lisa Marie, gave her for Christmas one year, which Presley personalized with two rows of simulated diamonds.
Presley says she began working on the line two years ago and designed it with price points for every woman. The line sells for $23 to $75 and includes rings, earrings and necklaces made from metal, crystal, enamel and simulated diamonds.
Presley, who owned a boutique in 1973 and had a clothing line bearing her name, says her focus now is to grow the jewelry line.
"I've designed this line for women of any age to wear," she says. "It's very today and quite hip, but very versatile."

Message from Lisa - For the sake of (anglo) clarity "Reports that I don't like England and am moving back to the US are completely untrue and made up by the same reporter from "The Sun" who has been consistently and relentlessly making up lies and fabrications about me since I moved there last August. For the record and once again, my family and I absolutely adore England and our life in England, There are no plans to move as is being reported."
