Priscilla Presley Remembers Elvis
12.30.2010
Michael Wright
In anticipation of what would have been Elvis Presley’s 76th birthday on January 8, USA Weekend sat down with Presley’s ex-wife, Priscilla, to reminisce about The King. The Naked Gun actress is currently (in her role with Elvis Presley Enterprises) working with Cirque du Soleil on a new Las Vegas show, Viva ELVIS. In the interview, she spoke on a variety of topics.
On what fans might not know about Elvis:
“He admired other entertainers and wasn't threatened by their coming to Vegas. Elvis always felt there was room for everyone. Tom Jones, Cher, Nancy Sinatra — he was right there to help.”
On her favorite Elvis song:
“‘Bridge over Troubled Water.’ We were in Vegas when the horse he had gifted me passed away. He sang that song to me. Every time I hear it, that's what I think of.”
On Graceland:
“We'd spend a lot of time upstairs listening to records and watching old movies and just having a great time with each other. It's exactly the way it was as he left it. You can feel that his spirit is definitely there.”
On her favorite memory of Elvis:
“Watching him perform. When he'd have his little smiles or he'd nod or pick somebody out in the audience to sing to, giving them a thrill. It was really touching.”

December 26, 2010 ~ USA Weekend ~ Priscilla Presley tells why Elvis still rocks Las Vegas
By Gayle Jo Carter
To celebrate Elvis Presley's 76th birthday, Jan. 8, we decided to check in with his ex-wife, Priscilla, who has been busy this past year reliving some of her favorite Elvis memories through Cirque du Soleil's Las Vegas show, Viva ELVIS. The extravaganza "gives his presence," says Presley, 65.
We asked her to tell us more about the king of rock 'n' roll. Why Elvis would like Viva: "Knowing Elvis, who loved entertainment of all kinds, the fact that the show is on the Strip in Las Vegas, where he loved to perform, where his presence is, I think he'd be very honored," Presley says. The two were married there in 1967.
Her influence on the show: "The big deal for me is that his style, his singing, his voice all comes from gospel, so they're adding a little more of that to give you more of a journey."
Priscilla's favorite Elvis song: Bridge Over Troubled Water. "We were in Vegas when the horse he had gifted me passed away. He sang that song to me. Every time I hear it, that's what I think of."
Least favorite Elvis song:"The movie songs. They were certainly not him."
What we still might not know about Elvis: He admired other entertainers and wasn't threatened by their coming to Vegas. "Elvis always felt there was room for everyone. Tom Jones, Cher, Nancy Sinatra — he was right there to help."
Favorite memory of Elvis: Watching him perform. "When he'd have his little smiles or he'd nod or pick somebody out in the audience to sing to, giving them a thrill. It was really touching."
Things you tell the grandkids about their grandfather: "With the older ones, they've now seen enough that they could say, 'Wow.' Because he had everything. He had the looks, the sex appeal, the style, but he was also humble and generous. He was a phenomenon."
Why she loves Graceland, their Memphis home: "We'd spend a lot of time upstairs listening to records and watching old movies and just having a great time with each other. It's exactly the way it was as he left it. You can feel that his spirit is definitely there."

December 24, 2010 ~ Myrna Smith of the Sweet Inspirations Passes Away
On Christmas Eve, December 24th, 69-year-old Myrna Smith died in a hospital in Los Angeles. The singer was one of the original members of the Sweet Inspirations, who in the seventies served as background singers for Elvis Presley.
In 1965, Myrna Smith joined the Sweet Inspirations, founded by Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston and sister of Dionne Warwick. In 1967 they recorded background vocals for the Van Morrison hit "Brown Eyed Girl".
In 1968 they had a #5 U.S. R&B and #18 U.S. Pop hit with "Sweet Inspiration", which led to Elvis Presley requesting them to join him in his live comeback shows.
In the 1970s onward, Smith made a career for herself as a songwriter. She worked with, among others, ex-Beach Boy Carl Wilson. In 2010 she toured with "Elvis: In Concert" in Europe. The show reunited former Elvis band mates live on stage with a state of the art video-projected Elvis.
In March 2010, while on tour, Myrna developed pneumonia. Once back in the U.S., her condition continued to deteriorate, as she suffered kidney failure, further complicated by a severe stroke. She was confined to her bed since October.

Presley pays tribute to her 'Naked Gun' co-star with the essay, recalling how the actor 'broke the ice to a friendship'.
PRISCILLA PRESLEY has paid tribute to her late NAKED GUN co-star LESLIE NIELSEN in a heartfelt magazine essay.
The funnyman died of complications from pneumonia, aged 84, last month (Nov10) and Presley decided to put her thoughts about him into words for a new Entertainment Weekly magazine article.

She reveals he greeted her for the first time with a fart machine.
Presley recalls, "I didn't know how to react... He saw the look on my face and started laughing. He took his hand from his pocket and pulled out this gadget that he carried with him all the time... his whoopee cushion.
"That prank broke the ice to a friendship I will always cherish."
But she admits it was tough to keep a straight face on the set of the film: "I usually couldn't get through the first or second take of a scene."
